Tegenwoordig is het wereldwijd geliefd, vooral in de keuken vanwege zijn veelzijdige toepassingen. Suikerm\u00e4is is een eenjarig gewas dat je zelf kunt telen in je moestuin. Het wordt vaak vers gegeten, geroosterd, gekookt of toegevoegd aan soepen en salades. Suikerm\u00e4is behoort tot de <a href=\"\/index.php\/tag\/vruchtdrager\/\">vruchtgewassen<\/a>, met een korte levenscyclus: van zaadje tot oogst duurt slechts enkele maanden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Nederland wordt suikerma\u00efs steeds populairder onder moestuinders vanwege de relatief eenvoudige teelt en de heerlijke opbrengst. Een leuk weetje is dat suikerma\u00efs al geoogst moet worden voordat de suikers in zetmeel worden omgezet, waardoor het belangrijk is om op het juiste moment te plukken. De plant heeft indrukwekkende bijnamen zoals &#8220;zoete koning&#8221; en &#8220;gouden kolven&#8221;. Elke draad is verbonden met een afzonderlijke maiskorrel  in de kolf. class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De Tuinagenda geeft de volgende perioden aan als optimale perioden voor het zaaien van suikermais.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img zijn gevoelig voor koude grond. Gebruik potjes van minimaal 9 cm doorsnede, zodat de jonge wortels genoeg ruimte hebben om zich te ontwikkelen. Vul de potten met een luchtig en goed doorlatend <a href=\"https:\/\/tinygardenbigfun.nl\/index.php\/weetjes-uit-de-moestuin\/zaai-en-stekgrond\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">zaaimedium<\/a>. Zaai per pot \u00e9\u00e9n of twee zaden op een diepte van 2-3 cm, en zorg ervoor dat de kiemtemperatuur rond de 20-25 \u00b0C ligt. Suikerma\u00efs kiemt meestal binnen 7 tot 10 dagen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Na het kiemen <a href=\"https:\/\/tinygardenbigfun.nl\/index.php\/weetjes-uit-de-moestuin\/uitdunnen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dun je uit <\/a>tot de sterkste zaailing per pot. Suikerma\u00efs heeft een zonnige standplaats nodig met goed doorlatende, voedzame grond. Plant de zaailingen op een afstand van 30 cm van elkaar in een blokvorm, want ma\u00efs bestuift zichzelf door wind en heeft buren nodig voor kruisbestuiving. Een vak van 30&#215;30 cm is geschikt voor \u00e9\u00e9n plant, terwijl in grotere vakken van 40&#215;40 cm eventueel ruimte is voor interplanting, bijvoorbeeld met sla of spinazie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zorg ervoor dat je de wortelkluit volledig in de grond zet, waarbij de bovenkant van de kluit net onder het oppervlak ligt. Je kunt zien dat de kolven rijp zijn als de zijdraden (de &#8220;haren&#8221;) aan de bovenkant van de kolf donkerbruin zijn geworden, maar nog niet helemaal droog. De maiskorrels moeten goudgeel en zacht zijn. Een goede test is om met je duim een korrel in te drukken: als er melkachtig sap uit komt, is de ma\u00efs klaar om geoogst te worden. Te laat oogsten kan tot smaakverlies leiden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knip de kolven af met een scherpe snoeischaar of draai ze voorzichtig van de stengel. Suikerma\u00efs moet snel worden gegeten of ingevroren, want na de oogst zet de aanwezige suiker snel om in zetmeel. Het laatst genoemde ras is vroeger rijp dan het eerst genoemde. Andere bekende rassen zoals \u2018Golden Bantam\u2019 en \u2018Swift\u2019 zijn eveneens goede rassen voor het zelf telen van suikermais in de Nederlandse moestuin. Deze rassen zijn relatief snel rijp en goed bestand tegen het wisselvallige weer. Suikerma\u00efs heeft een voedzame grond nodig, dus werk voor het planten compost of mestkorrels in de bodem. Regelmatig water geven is belangrijk, vooral tijdens droge periodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let op mogelijke plagen zoals bladluizen of vogels die zich graag aan de zaden of jonge planten tegoed doen. Gebruik netten om je gewas te beschermen. En ik heb ook nog geen plannen om dat wel te gaan doen. Ik vind de plant veel te groot voor mijn moestuinbakken. Mais kan 2 meter hoog worden plus dan nog eens 60 cm van mijn moestuinbak. Dan heb ik een trappetje nodig.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maar ik ontdek nu de vari\u00ebteit &#8216;Zoete Jan&#8217;. Dat is een compacte vari\u00ebteit die niet hoger wordt dan 150 cm. Deze soort is vroeg oogstbaar en een (voor)jaar met kou en regen deert hem niet! Door de geringe hoogte is teelt in grote potten een goede optie! Elke flinke, gele kolf geeft ruim 200 korrels.
